A second chance for patients, who-due to complexities such as a difficult airway, congenital heart disease, syndromes, developmental delay, surgical complexities and malnutrition-have been cancelled for anaesthesia and surgery by other non-profit organizations, to receive safe and quality re-examinations, anaesthesia, surgery and postoperative care from a highly skilled and experienced team of volunteer medical professionals with specialized medical equipment.

Education for local staff and volunteers

- Lectures, seminars and scenario training.

Clinical training for local staff and volunteers to assess and participate in the treatment of difficult cases.

  • A medical team with extensive experience in the fields required, as well as tailored expertise needed for specific patient needs.

  • A medical team with abundant experience volunteering in medical missions in low-income countries.

  • Specialized medical equipment such as fiber optic- and video laryngoscope, cardiac ultrasound and specifically needed surgical equipments.

  • Specially developed curriculum for training of local volunteers and staff.

  • Specialized arranged Second Chance Medical missions or integrated work by the Second Chance team on regular missions arranged by other non-profit organizations.

REQUIRES:

  • Identification of a local Point Person/Program Manager to work in collaboration with counterpart in The Second Chance Medical Program.

  • Development of a database of patients previously cancelled from surgery, due to the reasons described above, in already established centers, and/or in countries with highly functioning local organizations/foundations that provide logistics support for surgical patients and their families.

  • Identification of patient needs based on their condition, and identification of hospitals with the necessary medical level to ensure safe anaesthesia, surgery and postoperative care.

  • Coverage of all patients and family expenses (logistics, travel, lodging) by partnering foundation/host hospital.

  • Obtaining the necessary equipment and medications for general anaesthesia and surgery. Most of the needed specialized equipment is available within The Second Chance Medical Program, but certain items will need to be secured on site.

MEDICAL TEAM

The Second Chance Medical team consists of members with extensive experience in the fields required as well as abundant experience from volunteering on medical missions in low-income countries around the world.

The Second Chance Medical Program offers team members within

the following professions:

  • Plastic- and Craniofacial Surgeons

  • Paediastric Surgeons

  • Paediatric Anaesthesiologists

  • Paediatric Intensivists

  • Nurses with education and experience from work in Paediatric care including: Anaesthesia, Intensive Care, Surgery, Recovery and Ward.

  • Child Life Specialists

  • Speech Language Pathologists

 

Upon request The Second Chance Medical Program also tailor expertise team needed for specific patient needs.

The Second Chance Medical Program provides all needed specialized medical equipment such as fiber optic- and video laryngoscope, cardiac ultrasound as well as specific surgical equipment.

EDUCATION

AND TRAINING

The Second Chance Medical Program offers a specially developed curriculum for education and clinical training of local volunteers and staff. The education curriculum includes lectures, seminars and scenario training as well as clinical access and participation in the treatment of difficult anaesthesiological and surgical cases.
